Kim
Coles. Actress, stand-up comedienne, tv star and one of Carol Shaw's
original models when she created BBW Magazine. It looks like Kim is one
woman who hasn't allowed social prejudice against fat people to stand in her
way!Kim: Incredible success, it's just something you come to expect when you're me! Her confidence is positively awe inspiring. But when she first arrived in LA with aspirations toward show business she felt anything but confident. Kim: When you come to California and you get off the plane, the first thing they hand you is an orange and the number of a personal trainer. I had worked so hard at learning to be an entertainer. But the only thing these producers saw when I walked through the door was a fat girl. Well, a particularly attractive fat girl, and that's not who they wanted to cast. They didn't care if I could do the job. They just obsessed about my size. Even the validation of her beauty and talents won by being appointed one of the very first ever Big Beautiful Models in Carol Shaws BBW magazine wasn't enough to buoy her confidence. She gave in to the prejudice and lost weight. Kim: The weight loss did open a few doors for me. I got a job on the Fox Network show IN LIVING COLOR and after that LIVING SINGLE. But is was the rigorous work schedule and
daily pressure of performing on a network situation comedy that eventually
forced her to make the decision to give up dieting. Kim: Basically you can't work that hard and not eat. I just didn't have the time or the energy to be obsessed with my weight any more. By the end of the run of LIVING SINGLE I was back up over 200 pounds. The born-again big Kim Coles doesn't seem to regret her decision to stop dieting. Kim: If some silly producer ever tells me to lose weight again, I won't run away crying! I'll just slap his silly little face and tell him I love myself the way I am! |
